Complementarian thinking among young women

January 20th, 2006

The other day my wife spoke in a missions training school about the need for excellent female leadership. The young women screamed the loudest against what she said, apparently much more so than the young men who were present. Responsibility finds its opponents in unusual places sometimes. Apparently some young women would rather defer the leadership to men in order to avoid their own responsibilities.

What’s really stupid about this is that complementarianism requires strong women leaders. Paul quite clearly instructs women to teach women and children, and complementarians have never had a problem with that. Doesn’t that require leading?

Of course, egalitarians are just as guilty on this issue by pretending that there’s no room within complementarianism for women to exercise gifts of teaching or leading in other ways. There clearly are.
